US Residency and USMLE: Everything you Need to Know
As an international medical graduate, obtaining a residency in the United States can be a complex and challenging process. However, with the right guidance and resources, you can successfully navigate the path to US residency and build a rewarding career as a physician. In this blog post, we’ll cover everything you need to know about US residency and the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), including how Astute Academy can help.
US Residency
US residency is a postgraduate medical training program for physicians who have graduated from medical schools outside the United States. The primary goal of US residency is to provide physicians with the clinical experience and knowledge required to practice medicine in the United States. Residency programs vary in length, depending on the medical specialty, but generally last around 3 Years.
To be eligible for US residency, international medical graduates must meet certain requirements, including passing the USMLE, obtaining an ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) certification, and obtaining a visa to work in the United States.
USMLE
The USMLE is a three-step examination that assesses a physician’s ability to apply their knowledge and skills to patient care. It is a critical step for international medical graduates who want to obtain US residency and practice medicine in the United States.
Step 1 of the USMLE covers the basic science principles of medicine and is typically taken after the second year of medical school. Step 1 of USMLE is Pass or Fail only & not merit-based.
Step 2 was divided into two parts: Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) and Step 2 Clinical Skills (CS). As CS is now canceled, Step 2 CK only assesses the physician’s ability to apply medical knowledge to clinical situations.
Step 3 is the final step of the USMLE and assesses the physician’s ability to manage patients with complex medical conditions.
